Comment: Set aside finger pointing and focus By Vicky Pike This is about providing services not finger pointing. We all have our opinion on what is going on in our county. Set aside the finger pointing. Who is right who is wrong? There is enough blame to go around on both sides. This whole mess centers on an occupational tax all but 10 now 9 counties in the state have. Those who work out of the county pay it. They have to if they want to work in that county. We have seen we can't operate without our beloved Sheriff's Office. Well this goes further. Most county employees are way underpaid compared with what other counties are paying. Sooner or later those qualified people are going to have to choose to go elsewhere for better pay. They have to. There is such a difference in pay they can't afford not to. A few have stayed hoping it would get better. Has it? No. We have to have revenue from taxes to pay for services. These county employees who have stayed with us are a true treasure. When we pick up the phone to call for help we hope there is some ready and available to come to our assistance. Sometimes these calls are situations that will be some of the worst in our lives. We hope that these caring individuals are there and ready to help. What if one is in Breeding and needed in Knifley? That's a long haul across county. Now the city has stepped up to help us until Oct 1. What happens after that????? We are loosing workers in every department because of pay rate. I'm asking all of you that read this article to contact your elected official and demand they do what is necessary to bring in the revenue we need to pay for our essential services. We are about to see how bad it can get if they don't. I have friends on both sides of this. Most of you know where I stand but I'll not go there because this is about our county workers and not about conflicting personalities. I'm hoping and praying they start on this process at fiscal court Tuesday night in sheriffs pay discussion. Pray that cooler heads will prevail and we can start to fix this mess we have created by kicking taxes down the road to another year. Other counties are having to bite the bullet and raise their occupational taxes yet ours voted to go to the .25 % in the ordinance when they had to opportunity to leave it at .5% but that was turned down. Our county is at stake folks. I know there are some out there willing to do the right thing. Pray that they are successful. I truly hope I haven't lost any friends due to being so outspoken. This is so important I'm taking the risk. In closing. I love my community and want it to prosper like adjoining countries. And most of all I want to personally thank each and every county employee who has stuck with us. God bless you. This county is loosing one of the best men I've had the pleasure to work with in Sheriff Josh Brockman. I understand why he's leaving. Don't know how he's made it this far without collapsing with 100 hr work weeks. You will be missed greatly but you can always come help us out at the Pampered Angus Ranch if you get bored.
