LWC students show appreciation to local community on Malvina Farkle Day

By Venus Popplewell
LWC Director of Public Relations

"So many of our days are take days, but this is a day of giving where we try to make a difference in somebody else's life."

Those were the words of Lindsey Wilson College President William T. Lucky Jr. as he stood before a sleepy but electrified crowd of LWC students, early Wednesday morning, who were ready and willing to disperse into the Columbia-Adair County community and show their appreciation through acts of service.

"Malvina Farkle Day is a day where we take a time out and consider the opportunity and the impact that we have on Columbia-Adair County and the ability we have to make a difference throughout this commonwealth," said Luckey who is in his 26th year as president of LWC. "We will have groups spread out all over the community today. It's a wonderful opportunity to give back. This is a day of giving. So many of our days are take days, but this is a day where we try to make a difference in somebody else's life."

LWC junior Halee Bunch, a commuting student from Burkesville, Kentucky, visited the Adair County Primary Center as her community service site.

"I love working with the kids and seeing their smiles every time we talk to them," said Bunch who is an elementary education major. "We get to connect with them on a different level. It's crazy what Lindsey Wilson and this community have done for us, so to give back in this way is so inspiring."

Malvina Farkle Day is named in memory of a mythical Lindsey Wilson alumna and staff member who lived a life of service and fun. Classes are dismissed for the day while students spend the morning working on community service projects. The afternoon includes campus games and activities.

Physical education junior Michael Rempel from Asuncion, Paraguay and member of the men's LWC soccer program said he enjoyed introducing the children at ACPC to the game of soccer.

"Most of the kids have probably never played soccer," said Rempel. 'So we show them some soccer activities and moves and they have fun and we have a great time too. Malvina Farkle Day just makes us all feel good and being with these kids and seeing their smiles makes it all the better."

Lindsey Wilson gives over 30,000 hours of service to the local and surrounding communities each year. The financial impact of 30,000 hours of service equates to about $890,000.

Some of the Columbia-Adair County locations involved with 2024 Malvina Farkle Day were:

  • Adair County Public Library
