Outhouse Race 2024: time for construction to begin

By Kim Harwood, Executive Director, Edmonton Metcalfe Chamber of Commerce

If you like a challenge, gather your friends, family, and co-workers, build an Outhouse (unless you have one stored out back), then enter the Outhouse Race sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce for the 2024 Pumpkin Festival in Edmonton on October 5th. This race draws an excited crowd, and it is so much fun. There is no entry fee.

The Official Rules are provided below so you can start planning for the big day!

Construction
The perimeter of the structure must be 30 inches by 40 inches with no more than 1-inch tolerance. Top of structure must be no more than 6 feet tall and no less than 4 feet tall measured from the ground with 1-inch tolerance. Highest point does not include any decorative objects, flagpoles, or advertising devices.

The structure must have a metal base of sufficient strength to safely hold the weight of the rider for the entire race. The frame can be made of metal, but the majority of the structure should be of wood. The door may be full or half-size, with windows allowed. Metal and wood only. No Glass allowed.

All entries will roll on four caster-type swiveled wheels no more than 5 inches in diameter. Solid tires only, no tube type.

Any type of handle or grasping device may be attached to the outside of the outhouse for pushing or pulling during the race. Any handle used will not extend more than 12 inches from the main part of the structure. All outhouses will be human powered only.

Outhouses may be painted or decorated as desired, and creativity is encouraged. Pumpkin Festival theme is also encouraged, but not a requirement. Businesses and organizations may advertise or in any way promote themselves with their entry. The committee reserves the right to reject entries it deems to be decorated in an obscene fashion, or any outhouse deemed not suitable for a family-oriented audience.

Outhouse must be fully functional if placed over a hole in the ground, but will not be used during, before, or immediately after the race.

Crews
Crew will have 4 pushers/brakers/pullers and one rider. All 5 crewmembers must be touching the outhouse crossing the finish line to win. The rider will wear a helmet sufficient to protect against head injuries in any event. Seat belts optional.

All crew members must be at least 16 years of age, if under 18 years of age parental permission and a medical release will be signed by legal parent or guardian.

Conduct of race
Entries will be registered and have a race number 1 hour before race which will begin at 5:15 pm on race day. Sign up number will determine position. #1 and #2 will be first and so on.

Winners will be determined by the best-run time but will be run two entries at a time. Most forward structural part of the outhouse, not any grasping devices or appendages, shall be used in determining the starting and finishing positions.

Safety will supersede all other concerns. The committee's decision will be final in all matters. Committee or sponsors will not be responsible for injuries to any person or property.

Winners will be announced following the race and awards presented. The Chamber Board of Directors and staff hope to make this year's Pumpkin Festival the best yet, please share the date with family and friends. Come one, come all to the 42nd annual Pumpkin Festival!
