From Jeff Neagle, Communications Specialist
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

In the heart of rural southern Kentucky, the Lake Cumberland District Health Department (LCDHD) stands as a beacon of hope and support for individuals living with HIV through its dedicated Ryan White Program. Named after the courageous young advocate who fought against stigma and discrimination related to HIV/AIDS in the 1980s, this program continues Ryan's legacy by providing comprehensive essential support services to those in need across 35 southern and southeastern Kentucky counties.

Established in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, the Ryan White Program aims to improve the quality and availability of care for individuals affected by HIV who may face medical, financial, and social challenges. Serving a predominantly rural population, the program addresses not only medical needs but also the holistic well-being of its clients.

At the core of the Ryan White Program is a commitment to accessible healthcare. LCDHD offers a range of crucial services, including:

  • Medical Care Assistance: Through partnerships with local healthcare providers, LCDHD ensures that clients receive regular medical check-ups and access to HIV medications and specialized treatments.

  • Case Management: Trained case managers work closely with clients to navigate the complexities of healthcare, offering support with appointment scheduling, medication adherence, and referrals to additional services.

  • Counseling and Support: Dealing with HIV can be emotionally challenging. LCDHD helps provide access to counseling services to help individuals cope with their diagnosis, manage stress, and build resilience.

  • Transportation Assistance: Recognizing the rural nature of its service area, LCDHD offers help finding transportation assistance to ensure that clients can access medical appointments and essential services without barriers.

By providing comprehensive care and support, the program not only improves health outcomes but also enhances the overall quality of life for its clients. Success stories abound, illustrating the resilience and courage of those who have benefited from the program's services.

In 2023, the program served 142 clients across the region and held 4,386 medical case management encounters. Medical transportation was provided for 98 clients and food vouchers were available for 39 clients. 91% of active clients in the program have been virally suppressed. Looking ahead, the program aims to strengthen partnerships with local healthcare providers, increase outreach efforts, and continue advocating for individuals living with HIV. By fostering a supportive and inclusive environment, LCDHD strives to empower its clients to live healthy and fulfilling lives.
