It's summer: Watch out for kids and pedestrians Summer weather means that more people are outside. Kids are playing and more walkers and joggers are out every day - and this coming week we have the Adair County Fair going on. Drivers, please beware. A child struck by a car going 40 miles an hour has a greater chance of dying than a child hit by a car going 20 miles an hour. The Emergency Advice, Safety, and Education organization says it pays to slow down in residential sections and near playgrounds. According to the National Spinal Cord Injury Association, 44 percent of all spinal cord injuries result from traffic accidents. Causes of other spinal injuries include acts of violence (such as gunshot wounds), falls, and sports injuries. Two-thirds of sports injuries are from diving.
