LWC Swimming alum involved in Olympic Trials

Lindsey Wilson men's swimming alum Alexander Van Winkle was part of the USA Olympic Swimming Trials that took place in Indianapolis, Indiana June 15-23, 2024. He is a 2018 graduate of Lindsey Wilson with a BA in Math and a minor in Recreation, Tourism and Sport Management.

Van Winkle is the Facilities Assistant for the Indiana Convention Center and Lucas Oil Stadium. "My role is overseeing primarily the exterior facilities operations to help ensure that visitors and event holders are welcomed with a clean, safe and beautiful venue every day," Van Winkle said.

"What we care for are typically things most people don't notice unless we aren't doing our jobs, and it looks bad," Van Winkle added. "We know we've done our job in supporting an event if people don't notice anything on their way into the swim trials."

The trials were held at Lucas Oil Stadium marking the first time ever that the event was staged on a football field. On the first night of the trials 20,689 fans attended breaking the attendance record for largest indoor swimming event. The record lasted until Wednesday June 19 when 22,209 fans attended. On the second day, 17,697 people attended setting a record for the most-attended prelims session.

Van Winkle has stayed connected in the aquatics realm working at the YMCA in Westfield, Indiana as their first aquatics director and opening the 10 lane, 50 meter Olympic-sized pool in 2021.

"My favorite part of the was watching one of my former lifeguards from when I was the Aquatics Director for the Ascension St. Vincent YMCA in Westfield make the Olympic Trials team!," Van Winkle said. "Luke Whitlock made the team in the 800-meter free but also placed top five in the 400-meter free and 3rd in the 1500-meter free."
