Cyrus / Downtown fashion deals, early 1946

The letter about shopping at Lerman's and The Style Shop piqued my curiosity, so out came backward-looking crystal ball to check for downtown fashion deals in days of yore. As fate would have it, the past revealed was that of sixty years ago--early 1946.

Only two stores offered specific descriptions and unfortunately, there were no ads from Lany Bray or the Style Shop.

In a late January ad, Lerman Bros. offered a number of outfits from the Doris Dodson Junior Originals Collection, sizes 9-15, including the Such Excitement, a "two-piece... with wing sleeves. Avocado green, natural, pink printed spun rayon butcher linon [linen??];" and the Boy-Meets Girl ". . . side wrap dress, Lime - yellow - red, blue with wine. peach with aquar rayon sheeting." Prices not stated.

About the same time, Russell & Co., "The House of Quality," offered the Forget-me-not ensemble from the Carole King Juniors Collection. The outfit was described thus: "Forget-me-nots make you memorable. . .in this exclusive Carole King pattern that combines a Melody skirt with appliqued bodice of Splash Lyn rayon." Hunter green, spice brown, raspberry and navy, in sizes 9 to 15. It no doubt was a steal at $10.95.

Another Russell & Co. ad tantalized the junior miss with two other Carole King outfits. One, the Party Girl, was described as "A soft little rayon party dress that makes YOU the news. Sweetly scalloped and peplumed, it has the fluid fit that idealizes young curves. Sun lime, aqua, strawberry ice, blush lilac. . .with white embroidered flowers. Sizes 9 to 15, $14.95.

The other, called Heartbreaker, was described thus: "Sudden stripes quicken the spring scene . . . add spice to a gentle new silhouette. See how they fall into soft flounces at the shoulders. . .accent the rhythmic unpressed pleats of the skirt. Of rayon . . . in hope turquoise, valor rose and spice rust." Sizes 9 to 15. $12.95.

Not to be outdone, Lerman Bros. later in the month offered -- at $10.95 -- a variety of Tommie Austin Casuals to capture the eyes, imaginations, and, of course, dollars, of the older sisters and Mamas of the Junior Misses.

The description of one such garment, the Best Bib'n'Tucker dress, stated, "Yes, you need a casual with a dressy touch. . . Tommie Austin does this one with a going-to-party look--its casual simplicity softened with crochet-stitch trimming beautifully stitched tucks. Fashioned of DUVAL rayon crepe in Navy, Aqua, Rose or Gray. Sizes 12 to 20."

Another in the Tommie Austin Casuals line included the Spring Flannel: "You need a flannel dress for the cool spring days ahead...Three-quarter coat front--so easy to don, so smart when it's on." Aqua, Melon, Aqua, Lime. And a third, the Best-Seller in Print, "To make you pretty as picture, of course you want a new print dress...shirt-cuffed long sleeves; convertible club collar; soft unpressed skirt pleats--and a beautiful GALEY and LORD rayon crepe print." Aqua, pink or Lime grounds.

All of the styles mentioned above were shown modeled at a just-below-the-knee length.
