Help someone until Red Cross can arrive TJ Health Columbia recently provided a free "Hands-only CPR" lunch and learn experience to help folks be prepared for an emergency. Hands-Only CPR can help gain precious time for a person experiencing a cardiac event but knowing First Aid, CPR and how to use an AED (automated external defibrillator) will enable you to provide life-saving care in a range of emergencies. Steps below provide a guide and a link to a training video. Step 1. After using the "shout, tap, shout technique" to the victim, if there is no breath, point to one person nearby and, in an authoritative tone, have them call 9-1-1 and get an AED. Step 2: Ensure the person is on their back on a firm, flat surface. Step 3: Kneel beside the person. Your knees should be near the person's body and spread about shoulder-width apart. Step 4: Use correct hand placement. Place the heel of one hand in the center of their chest, with your other hand on top. Interlace your fingers and make sure they are up off the chest. Step 5: Use correct body position. Position your body so that your shoulders are directly over your hands. Lock your elbows to keep your arms straight. Step 6: Give continuous compressions. Push hard and fast (at least 2 inches; 100 to 120 compressions per minute). Step 7: Allow chest to return to its normal position after each compression. Step 8: Use an AED as soon as it is available. The goal is to train 1,000 people in this area to use this very basic life-saving method.
