Evan and Matt - partners in investigations

Columbia Police Department K9 Matt, featured in the photo today with Sgt. Evan Burton, is a nine year old German Shepherd that works drug detection, article (evidence) searches, tracking (criminal and or missing persons), also making criminal apprehensions if needed.

Sgt. Burton and K9 Matt graduated from the Top Dog Police Academy located in Evansville, Indiana in 2016. The two have been parters at the Russell County Sheriff’s Office and are currently parters at the Columbia Police Department.

He says, "K9s are a huge asset to local law enforcement while also assisting other neighboring law enforcement agencies, protecting their communities!"

Congratulations go to Columbia Police Department Sgt. Evan Burton who was promoted to Detective before the end of the year according to CPD Chief Charles Greer. Detective Sergeant Burton is pictured with Matt, one of the Department's K9s at City Hall. The two graduated from the Top Dog Police Academy located in Evansville, Indiana in 2016 and have been parters at the Russell County Sheriff’s Office and are currently parters at the Columbia Police Department since then.
