Wrestling: LWC 4-1 at Rocky Top Duals

Gatlinburg, TN - The No. 15 ranked Lindsey Wilson wrestling team went 4-1 Saturday at the Rocky Top Duals. The Blue Raiders defeated Pikeville, Rio Grande, Bluefield and West Virginia Tech and fell to No. 2 Life.

Lindsey Wilson will return to action on January 6, 2024, for the Fairmont State Invitational.


Lindsey Wilson 50 - Pikeville 9
The Blue Raiders got forfeit victories in five of the first six weight classes (125, 133, 141, 157 and 165) and Adrian Ayala picked up an 18-5 major decision over Tagge Fry to give Lindsey Wilson a 34-0 lead. Pikeville got its nine points at 174 and 184 pounds. Chase Price picked up a 10-5 decision over Jesus Avilia and the Bears got a forfeit victory at 184 pounds.

Nikolas Perovic earned a 21-6 tech fall over Jesse McCoy at 197 pounds and Carlos Figueroa recorded a second-period pin over Reginald Whyte at 285. Christopher Griel picked up a 15-0 tech fall over Gavin Hunt.

Lindsey Wilson 4 - Life 42
Life won nine of the 10 weight classes in the dual with four tech falls, two decisions, two major decisions and a forfeit. The Blue Raiders' lone win of the dual came at 133 pounds. Nate Becker earned a 12-3 major decision over Ethan Sellers.

Lindsey Wilson 41 - Rio Grande 6
Lindsey Wilson got out to an 18-0 lead after winning the first three weight classes. Clarence Lee Green earned a pin over Layton Vennon at 125 pounds. Nate Becker recorded a first-period pin over Phillip Balis at 133 pounds and the Blue Raiders picked up a forfeit victory at 141 pounds.

Rio Grande's Westyn Moyer picked up a 4-2 decision over Adrian Ayala at 149 pounds. The Blue Raiders then won the next two weight classes with Brandon Irigoyen earning a 3-1 decision over Mitchell Freeman at 157 pounds and picking up a forfeit at 165 to lead 27-3.

The Redstorm got their final three points at 174 pounds before Lindsey Wilson closed out the dual winning the final three weight classes. Following a forfeit at 184 pounds, Perovic had a 20-5 tech fall at 197 and Figueroa earned a 6-1 decision at heavyweight.

Lindsey Wilson 60 - Bluefield 0
The Blue Raiders got eight forfeit victories and two pins for the 60-0 victory. Green recorded a first-period pin against Ajay Pai at 125 pounds. Trevor Pogue pinned Delvin Taylor just 32 seconds into the match at 165 pounds.

Lindsey Wilson 44 - West Virginia Tech 10
The Blue Raiders jumped out to a 12-0 lead after back-to-back forfeits to begin the match. West Virginia Tech's Corbyn Cunningham earned a 21-8 major decision over Garrett Koestel at 141 pounds.

Lindsey Wilson would extend its lead winning the next four weight classes. Drake Montelongo and William George got back-to-back pins at 149 and 157 pounds, respectively. Following a forfeit at 165, Pogue picked up a tech fall at 174 pounds to give the Blue Raiders a 35-4 lead.

The Golden Bears picked up a forfeit at 184 pounds before the Blue Raiders closed the match with back-to-back wins at 197 and 285 pounds.
