Basketball: Guess' layup at the buzzer leads LWC past Midway

Midway, KY - Taylor Guess scored a layup at the buzzer to give the Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team a 65-64 victory over Midway Saturday at Marshall Gymnasium.

Following a Midway (2-5) missed shot, the Blue Raiders (5-2) got the ball with nine seconds left. Guess missed the layup coming out of the timeout but there was a tie-up and the possession arrow favored Lindsey Wilson. Guess received the inbound and drove to the hoop getting the shot off just in time to give the Blue Raiders the victory.


Midway led 58-54 early in the fourth quarter before Lindsey Wilson scored the next nine points to lead 63-58 with 2:19 to play. Back-to-back three's by Midway's Atlantis White gave the Eagles a 64-63 lead with 1:09 to play.

Guess matched a career-high with 14 points on 5-of-12 shooting from the field and connecting on all four of her attempts from the charity stripe. Jarie Thomas was also in double figures with 10 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

The Blue Raiders scored six of the first eight points in the first quarter propelled by two Hall threes. Lindsey Wilson led 12-8 before Midway took its first lead of the quarter with a 5-0 run with 3:34 to play. Davis made a layup to give the Blue Raiders a 14-13 lead before the Eagles scored the next five points to lead 18-14. Lindsey Wilson scored four of the final six points in the quarter to trim the Midway lead to 20-18.

Hodges started the second quarter converting an and-one opportunity to give the Blue Raiders a 21-20 lead. Midway then answered scoring the next five points to lead 25-21 with 7:43 remaining in the half. Lindsey Wilson tied the game scoring the next four points. Following a 5-2 run by the Eagles, the Blue Raiders scored the next six points to lead 33-30 with 3:32 to left in the half. Lindsey Wilson held a 37-34 lead with just over two minutes left before Midway closed out the half on a 6-1 run to jump in front 40-38.

Lindsey Wilson opened the third quarter scoring the first four points to lead 42-40. Tied at 43, the Eagles scored five of the next seven points to take a 48-45 advantage. The Blue Raiders responded with a 7-1 run to lead 52-49 with 4:13 to play in the quarter. Midway closed out the third quarter on a 7-2 run to lead 56-54 heading into the fourth.

The Blue Raiders return to action on Monday at 6pmCT when they host Fisk (TN) at Biggers Sports Center, 360 Spickard Drive, Columbia, KY.
