Opinion: Payroll Tax

By Mary Bardin

I travel most of Adair county on weekly basis. I was taught by my brother, Bob Marshall, to stop in at the country stores. He said to make your presence known because you never know what you will see or hear. Also you never know when you may need help. I do visit country stores.

The payroll tax is often a subject of conversation. From what I hear, most people were in favor of .75 because of the financial status of Adair County. There are some, of course that are against the thought of payroll tax. Some of these people are not employed and really wouldn't impact them.

It seems strange to me the magistrates agreed to .5 % at the last minute of fiscal court meeting, but very much against .75% It appears the magistrates finally realized what is best for the county, and concerns of their district, but don't want to agree with County Judge Executive. This is just my personal opinion, not stating this as actual fact.

As the County Jail continues to have drug overdoses, I wonder if the county could avoid drugs being brought in if we could afford more staff and better training for our jail staff. When I attend Fiscal Court Meetings, I hear about the need for more staff, better pay and equipment from Sheriff Dept, jail, ambulance service, and animal shelter and 911 center. All of these are county departments. All are very important for the safety and well-being of our county. Sheriff Brockman says he has one deputy on at night. I don't know if the county is aware of the fact that one deputy can not safely protect our community.

I am glad the magistrates finally agreed to a payroll tax, but very disappointed in the amount they voted in favor of.
