Volunteer shares his Hosparus experience By Danny L. Morris After sixty years I moved back to Campbellsville to retire in this beautiful homeland. One of the many advances I have found is the comprehensive care system provided by Hosparus. The excellent organization helps so many individuals, couples, and families who have sickness and needs far beyond their ability to handle. I found last year that much of their care comes through the organized approach to have volunteers from the community. It includes a wide range of opportunities which give support to people. The thrift store, office volunteers, various services, and personal care. It is my privilege to volunteer with Hosparus and give support to individuals and/or couples who need someone to encourage them. Sometimes it seems impossible to find a friend or a new friend when you or a family member is going through a serious illness. Finding a friend is most often difficult for any of us. That is when we define a friend as one who takes some time to care. Sometimes we, at first, feel we are not qualified to help because we can't say magic words to heal someone or relieve someone's despair. The truth of the matter is that every one of us just needs a caring person to give a personal presence, especially now. Some think that if they are around a person going through difficult times, they will just feel bad themselves. The truth is that one of the most wonderful things when I am discouraged, feeling some grief or signs of depression, is to find someone that I can bless with my presence or volunteer service. Hosparus gives me that opportunity. Corey Wilson, leader of the Hosparus volunteer management team always allows me to discover the place of volunteer providing the guidance and resources to make every volunteer moment count. I have visited a couple and given the spouse the opportunity to take time to get away from home and go to the grocery store. One lady said "she had not had an opportunity to do that for four years." They feel they are all alone and my presence encourages their heart. My conversation may be with someone who is sick. They often just need a listening ear to share about their life's journey. Of course, if it is the significant other or spouse, who is the caregiver they deeply appreciate someone to be presence. Just being present offers huge care. In my own experience when going through a difficult illness with my wife, I found the greatest blessing and help was with those who came to be present with me even for a short time. To this day I remember and will always cherish these precious people in my heart. You see the greatest thing we can do is just show up. Often our excuse for not showing up is just, "I am too busy," "Just don't have time." Most often it is discovered that if we include in our busy life just a moment to care for someone, we will bless them and us even more. As a result, we may experience more energy and time for our various life activities. I suggest giving Corey Wilson a call (270-789-4247) and finding out how you might take a few moments each month to volunteer with Hosparus and help people in their great moment of need.
