Carol Perkins: Too Much Relaxation

Previous Column: July 4th fireworks time

By Carol Perkins

At nine in the morning, I was reading the last chapters of a book I had to put down because my eyes kept closing. This can't be me. I NEVER read during the day because there is so much to do! This morning, however, the book kept calling me. Long before a shower, I picked it up and began.

I could see what I should be doing out of the corner of my eye. "Should" based on years of conditioned behavior of what my chores/duties/responsibilities should be, all self-imposed. Guy has no problem with downtime and can't understand my reluctance. "Who put you on a schedule?" he often says when I try to explain.

Many people make comments about my frequent travels. "You just go all the time," they'll say jokingly. I reply, "I sure do. I go when I can." The truth is when I was "laid up" with all my replacements and Covid, I vowed that when I was able, I would resume traveling, which has only happened this year. Last July, when we ventured to take a cruise, we came home with Covid! There is a reason for my desire/need to travel.

When I'm away from home, I can relax. When I'm away, I don't see housework or clutter or think about what I should be doing or what appointments I might have and hope not to forget. I don't worry about things that might bother me at home. I can "let go" without guilt. One would assume I would come home relaxed with a new lens on life. Yet, that never happens because after every trip, I come home "dead tired." It takes me a week to get over relaxing so much.
