Carol Perkins: What makes me happy

Previous Column: Serving Our Country

By Carol Perkins

I listen to podcasts while I'm driving. One of my favorites is "Literally" with Rob Lowe. Recently a guest was discussing his latest book, The Ikigai: The Japanese Secret To A Long And Happy Life by Francesc Miralles and Hector Garcia. I thought they were saying, IKY MAN." He talked about how we should find what we love to do and do it.

One of his "DO" things was having personal interactions, and during Covid, he was hospitalized three times for emotional/mental breakdowns. Being alone nearly killed him. When he came out of Covid, he studied in a monastery to be an ordained monk. Searching for happiness led him there.

After listening, I made a mental list of what I "Do" that makes me happy.

Doing something for someone else when they don't expect it is rewarding, even though I don't do this enough. I love to read and launched a nonstop, nightly reading schedule during Covid and all my replacement parts/broken leg days. I thrive on finding 99-cent books at thrift stores and visiting the library. I have also rekindled my sewing passion by making skirts, tote bags, and teddy bears for Operation Christmas Child Samaritan's Purse Mission. Guy steps on loose pins constantly. I GET EXCITED when I search for 99 cent sheets at thrift stores, of which I can make a dozen skirts (queen size). Ruffled bedskirts make cute ruffles for the bottom of these skirts. Heavy drapes make nice totes. I am obsessed.

Writing is a passion. I have completed the same book three times and am not satisfied. Two more are in the works. Writing my weekly articles never bores me. Probably my favorite thing to do is to interview people. Our radio show gives me a platform to do that each week.

I also like to piddle. Searching for the scissors in a drawer may lead to taking everything out and reorganizing it for the hundredth time. Finding things to take to the IAM store at Knob Lick where people can get what they need FREE makes me happy and has pushed me to part with many "treasures." Sitting in my recliner with my head back, a blanket up to my chin, and trying to think about nothing is what I DO at least once daily. If I drift off, that makes me happy.
