More Water Safety Month events at Holloway HWC

From Annissa Koekemoer
Aquatics Programming Intern

The pool at the Lindsey Wilson College Holloway Health and Wellness Center (HWC) will be open to the public from 2:30pmCT to 5:30pmCT on Sunday, May 21, 2023, free of charge and no HWC membership needed.

The Lindsey Wilson College swim team is hosting another week of group swimming lessons May 22-25, 2023. It has been very popular the last two years, and week 1 was a huge success! The children of the community have been able to learn in a fun environment. It is $45 for the week. Parents are welcome to sign up via email or at the front desk, no HWC membership needed.

The lessons are broken up into four groups, depending on their swimming abilities. Tadpoles and Guppies have two time slots to choose from, whereas Angel Fish and Stingrays only have one available timeslot per week:

  • Tadpoles are for the youngest ones. Preferably already 3 years old. These children are still getting comfortable in the water, learning how to blow bubbles, floating on their backs, and submerging in the water. Tadpoles are 4:15pmCT to 4:45pmCT or 5pmCT to 5:30pmCT.

  • Guppies are a bit more advanced. They already know how to blow bubbles, are comfortable floating, and can jump into the pool with their bodies fully submerged. They can typically also swim mostly unassisted. In this group they will learn the basics of freestyle and backstroke. Guppies are 4:15pmCT to 4:45pmCT or 5pmCT to 5:30pmCT.

  • The Angel Fish group further their stroke development. They learn the basics of all four strokes. Angel Fish are 5pmCT to 5:30pmCT.

  • The Stingrays group would work on improving their strokes, and maybe work on some diving. Stingrays are 5:30pmCT to 6pmCT.

At the end of the week, students will receive a skills sheet to show what they have learned and what they can still improve on. They will also receive a certificate of completion, signed by their group instructor.

There will be another round of group lessons hosted June 5-8 and June 12-15, however each time slot will be one hour earlier.
