Phillip Coffey - Three Rings from a Bell Three Rings from a Bell by Phillip Coffey (Memories my mother told me about her childhood and her mother) Hearing three rings of a very small bell, my mother beckons me, For she is very ill, I have been chosen to come by her bedside - right now. Her needs I must fulfill. I am but a teenager; she will not tarry with us much longer. Does she need a cup of cold springwater, medicine, or perhaps A damp washrag to sooth her too warm brow? Seeing me, her spirits are lifted; a broad smile appears across her rounded face. From her lips she is singing her favorite song - "In the Garden" My Father exits the house to bring in the kin and neighbors nearby To sing for her some familiar songs. She feels blessed. I stand at the bottom of the stairs observing mom and dad sitting on her deathbed. She goes into a deep sleep in my father's arms, her soul leaves with unseen angels from above. I am fourteen years old, I must become a surrogate mother, be the housekeeper, Do all the cooking, supervise cleaning, cooking and washing now. This story was posted on 2023-05-13 22:36:16
