Carol Perkins: Hello, Are You There?

Previous Column: Mother's Day

By Carol Perkins

I rested my head and pushed the button on the massage chair. My feet were soaking in the warm water, and I was relaxed. The pedicurist brought her tools and sat before me, giving me instructions on which foot first and double-checking the color. I closed my eyes again.

"Where are you?" she asked. I thought she was asking where I lived, so I said, "Edmonton." She then said, "What are you doing?" I opened my eyes and thought that one of us must not be hearing correctly.

She wasn't looking at me but was rubbing my foot and looking at her phone propped beside the chair, talking into the air. Then I knew she wasn't asking me questions, but was having a conversation with someone somewhere. I laid my head back and closed my eyes again as she continued that conversation until I heard her say, "Hello" to a new conversation. After four phone calls, my relaxing was over. I tried to keep my cool, but for the price of a pedicure, I didn't need to be in the middle of her conversations. Nor did I want to be.

With the age of Bluetooth and people talking into the air, I have often responded when I thought the person was talking to me. I have sat on planes before take off and listened to someone nearby talking into thin air, totally oblivious to the other 120 people on board. Doctor's offices, clerks in stores, grocery store aisles, and wherever people gather their phones are in hand. I don't need to hear their conversations, nor do I want to be part of their dialogue. When I get a manicure and a pedicure, I want total attention on my feet and hands. And I want quiet.

I guess I'll have to go somewhere where the workers don't speak English. They have a tendency to be more inclined to focus on the customer in my experience. Now that I've gotten that off my chest, I think I'll find my phone and call someone. Now, where did I leave it?
