Softball: LWC sweeps Pikeville in regular season finale

Desiree Chang's parents wanted to make sure that they had a front-row seat for their daughter's last career plate appearance on Saturday, April 29, 2023, at Marilyn D. Sparks Park, and Chang did not disappoint.

With two outs on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning, the fifth-year senior from Waimanalo, Hawaii crushed a two-run home run to right-center field to, in essence, seal a run-rule victory for the Lindsey Wilson softball team, secure a two-game sweep, and give the Blue Raiders' right fielder her first-ever fence-clearing shot.

The emotional moment highlighted a successful senior day for the locals, during which they recognized Alexis Garayzar, Za' Kiya Sizemore, and Chang before going on to defeat the University of Pikeville 3-1 and 13-4.

All told, the Blue Raider seniors combined to go 7-for-17 on the day with four runs batted in and three total extra-base hits.

Game One | Lindsey Wilson 3, Pikeville 1
The first outing of Saturday afternoon quickly had the makings of a pitcher's duel, as it took an inning and a half before the first hit was recorded by Lindsey Wilson.

Elizabeth Funk led off the second inning with a double to the left field wall, then Tanlee Hudgins found her way aboard the bags with a four-pitch walk. The two baserunners soon became the game's first runs when Brooklynn Ott and Madyson Jones connected on back-to-back singles to push the Blue Raiders ahead, 2-0.

From there, Abigail Cruz and the local's defense took over, holding the Bears hitless through five-plus innings.

The offense, in the meantime, tacked on an insurance run in the bottom leg of the fifth frame when Chang dropped a ground ball to the right side, plating Brylee Pickerell.

Pikeville did eventually break up the shutout and the no-hit bid in the top of the sixth inning, but that was all the visitors were able to muster up as the infield stood strong to help clinch the win.

Cruz closed her book in game one with her seventh complete-game effort of the year. The sophomore surrendered one earned run on two hits and retired four Bears on strikes. She also received a big help from her fellow infielders, seeing Funk and Jones combine for 11 assists, including a career-best seven from Funk at third base.

Game Two | Lindsey Wilson 13, Pikeville 4 (5 Innings)
The bats came to play in game two, and by the end of the day, there were 17 total runs on 18 hits across the scoreboard. Lindsey Wilson got the majority of both thanks to a quick start, ultimately leading to an early end after five innings.

Pikeville opened the scoring in its first plate appearance, bringing across two to take its first lead of the day. The early edge did not last long, however, as the Blue Raiders came right back in their first trip to the plate with a threat of their own.

Three consecutive walks to Chang, Sizemore, and Funk juiced the bases for Kelsie Bostock, and on a 2-2 pitch the junior locked in and smoked a deep fly ball to left field for Lindsey Wilson's first grand slam since May of 2022.

The Bears did piece together an answer in the top of the second frame to knot the game at 4-4, but the Blue Raiders acted swiftly to get their noses in front for good in the bottom half.

Funk and Bostock bumped up their RBI totals with respective base hits, and a sacrifice flyout by Hudgins capped the barrage after four runs on four hits.

Then, in the third frame, Chang picked it back up with an RBI-single to plate Pickerell before Garayzar and Funk continued the momentum with another set of RBI-base hits to run the home side's lead up to 11-4.

The fourth inning proved to be the dagger for the Blue Raiders, courtesy of Chang's no-doubter. The two-run blast increased Lindsey Wilson's lead above the necessary mark for a run-rule decision, which it would clinch in the top of the next inning.

Savannah Robbins earned her sixth win of the season in the circle for the locals, firing 4.2 innings and allowing two runs on four hits while striking out two.

All told, the Blue Raiders finished the doubleheader with 16 runs on 20 hits, paced by Pickerell, Funk, and Sizemore who each contributed three hits.

Lindsey Wilson now waits to learn its first opponent for the upcoming Mid-South Conference tournament. The playoff field will be announced later today.
