Letter: Regarding Squires Cemetery

By Billy J. Hagy

Citizens of the Town of Columbia, Kentucky and Adair County, Kentucky, I urge the powers that be in charge of the Columbia and Adair County government to leave the Squires Cemetery graves as they are in their current place. These people are relatives of not only mine, but probably are also to many in Adair County and Columbia presently. It's been stated by Donna Rieder that the moving of these graves, "is nothing short of sacrilege."

I wholeheartedly agree with Donna Rieder. One of those headstones has been identified as belonging to "Mollie S. Squires (1861/3-1888). Mollie was married to "Marion Franklin Harmon (1861-1940). They had two daughters, Lena (1883-1921) and Carrie Harmon (1886-1969). These people are cousins of mine. I guarantee there are many more descendants of this family besides myself that are still alive.

One other Columbia Magazine contributor, Annita Dial writes: "As a genealogist I study and respect the lives of people gone on before us." I applaud Annita Dial for her offer, suggestion, and input. By all means let us leave these remains at peace.

We shared Great-Grandparents, Robert Foster and his wife Elizabeth Garnett Foster.

For anyone who may be thinking this is not a serious matter, I urge you to go visit your Grandparents or Great-Grandparents final resting place. While there imagine someone telling you they are going to be moved for the convenience of some business entity so they can make a few dollars. Take a look at the news. Businesses go out of business due to bankruptcy, absorbed by a different entity, due to someone's death, or for many other reasons.

Take a stand and do the right thing, which in my opinion, is let the deceased lie in Peace.

Sincerely, Billy Joe Hagy
