Opinion: County Budget Problems

By James Roberts

I understand that we have problems with the county budget. The rest of us have to tighten our belt and not travel as much, not eat out as often, adjust our thermostats, turn off unwanted lights, etc. The county should do the same.

When you're top heavy you take the weight off the top and not the bottom. First of all you shouldn't put the burden on taxpayers who for the most part are already seeing higher fuel, utility, extra taxes and higher mortgage payments. A lot of these people are either going from paycheck to paycheck or retired and either have a fixed income or are unable to find more income from an already stressed/stretched budget.

A lot of elderly people already have to decide from month to month to either buy medicine or food. Why aren't we doing something about this rather than having to pay more taxes? Which avenue will they choose then?

If the jail is the problem then fix the problem rather than it continuing to be a burden. Home incarceration with ankle monitors would seem to be cheaper than being out daily expenses on these people in jail not doing anything. There needs to be a deterrent for repeat offenders. There is a lot of cleaning up to do in this county. Don't give them a choice! Make them do it! If the county goes ahead with these taxes the only thing that I can say is that we'll remember the ones that voted for it and vote you out when your election comes up. It would be political suicide if they choose this route and if I'm still around I'll be the the first to remind everyone. The same people that vote you in can vote you out! Just the way I feel about the situation, --James
