Mexican-American War program at next meeting of ACGS

During the Mexican-American War--1846-1848--there were numerous area men who volunteered for service, some for the U.S. Regular Army and some in volunteer regiments.

On Monday, March 6, 2023, there will be a program at the Adair Genealogy & History Research Center, the regular March meeting of the Adair County Genealogical Society, that will touch upon this conflict and some of the men who served.

Local men served in several units, particularly the 3rd Regiment of U.S. Dragoons, and the 4th Regiment of Volunteer Infantry. Here is a sampling of some who served:


  • Collins, William, private, 3 U.S. Dragoons, Captain Gaither's Company; applied for Bounty Land, warrant, no. 47-160-41845, rejected.

  • Cowan, Christopher C., Corporal, Company C, 3 Dragoons, from description upon enlistment: age 21, hazel eyes, dark hair, fair complexion, 6 feet 1\0xBD inches, born Pulaski County, Kentucky, farmer, enlisted 13 April 1847 at Columbia, Kentucky, by Capt. Gaither, discharged 31 July 1848 with expiration of service, at Jefferson Barracks, MO.

  • Cownover, William, Company C, 3rd Dragoons, died 3 December 1847 at City of Mexico; from his enlistment record: age 20, blue eyes, 'lyte' hair, fair complexion, 5 feet 9 inches, born Adair County, Kentucky, farmer, enlisted 29 March 1847 at Columbia, KY, by Capt. Gaither.

  • Craig, James W., private, Company B, 4 KY Foot Volunteers, Adair County.

  • Craig, Joseph M., private, Company B, 4 KY Foot Volunteers.

  • Creel, Charles H., 2nd Lieutenant, promoted to Adjutant, Company B, and Field & Staff as Adjutant, 4 KY Foot Volunteers.

  • Cundiff, Richard, Musician and private, Company B, 4 KY Foot Volunteers, Adair County.

  • Curry, Archilles J.

  • Curry, John A., private, Company C, 3 Dragoons; from enlistment record: age not given, blue eyes, light hair, fair complexion, 5 feet 9\0xBE inches, born Adair County, Kentucky, farmer, enlisted 5 April 1847 at Columbia, Kentucky by Capt. Gaither, died 30 September 1847 City of Mexico with 'diarrhora'; left widow, Mary Susan, and son, George Alfred Curry.

  • Curry, Robert W., private, Company B, 4 KY Foot Volunteers, died 9 January 1848 Vera Cruz, Mexico; son of Benjamin Curry; not married.

  • Curry, William A., private, Company C, 3 Dragoons; from description upon enlistment: age 18, blue eyes, brown hair, fair complexion, 5 feet 11 inches, born Adair County, Kentucky, farmer, enlisted on 20 April 1847 at Columbia, Kentucky, by Capt. Gaither, discharged 23 October 1847 for disability, at City of Mexico.
