Softball: LWC in conference opener this weekend

The Lindsey Wilson softball team will begin its 2023 Mid-South Conference schedule this weekend in northern Kentucky when the Blue Raiders travel to Crestview Hills to take on Thomas More University.

The three-game, two-day series with the Saints is slated to start on Sunday afternoon with a single game at 2pmCT, then conclude with a doubleheader on Monday at 11amCT and 1pmCT.

Lindsey Wilson is 6-2 in its last eight games, including wins in four straight. Offensively, the locals are batting 0.206 on the year and are tied for the second-most home runs in the conference with nine.

Senior Alexis Garayzar is responsible for a team-leading three of those long-distance shots. She also holds the Blue Raiders' second-highest batting average of 0.269, trailing only Za'Kiya Sizemore's mark of 0.360. The latter of the two paces the offense in total hits and extra-base hits, while Garayzar has batted in the most runs, entering the weekend with eight RBIs.

In the circle, Grace Adams (1-1), Abigail Cruz (2-1), and Savannah Robbins (2-0) each fired complete-game victories in their most recent appearances. Cruz, a sophomore, has retired a team-best 15 on strikes in five games so far this season, and Robbins boasts a sub-one earned run average of 0.95.

Thomas More (6-0, 0-0 MSC) opened its season with back-to-back one-run wins at Union College (Ky.), then went on to rout Trinity International University (Ill.) before pulling off another pair of close triumphs over Trinity Christian College (Ill.).

The Saints actively hold the conference's highest batting average at 0.395, led by the combo of Karys Black and Hailey McAdoo, who are the only batters in the Thomas More lineup to have at least 10 hits.

Five different pitchers have seen the rubber rectangle for the Saints, but only Black has thrown for more than four innings in a single game. The Sophomore (2-0) is limiting opposing offenses to a 0.186 batting average while she controls a 1.75 earned run average.

In 2022, Lindsey Wilson and Thomas More met in the Opening Round of the Mid-South tournament. The Blue Raiders shutout the Saints 3-0 and 2-0 to advance through to the quarterfinals in Bowling Green. The year before, the locals swept Thomas More in a four-game series by a combined score of 33-7.

Live stats and video will be available for this weekend's action. Stay tuned to lindseyathletics.com and the softball team's social media accounts for any updates regarding potential schedule changes.
