Mary Jo Hopper, 76, Salem, KY (1946-2023)

Mary Josephine Hopper of the Salem Community passed from this life to her eternal home on Sunday, February 26, 2023. She was 76 years old.

Funeral services are scheduled for 1pmCT on Wednesday, March 1, 2023, at Bernard Funeral Home, 367 N. Main St., Russell Springs, KY, with Bro. Joe Gosser and Bro. Lloyd Hopper officiating. Interment will follow in Salem Cemetery.

Visitation will be held after 11amCT on Wednesday until time for services.


Mary Jo was born December 31, 1946, in Eli, daughter of the late Irvin and Ilith Coffey Whittle. She married Lowell Hopper on October 19, 1963. There are two children born to their union.

Mary Jo was a member of Clear Springs Baptist Church, where she led Wednesday night children's services. She loved her church family and cherished the "after Sunday Night service business meetings" held every Sunday night. Mary Jo loved to garden and enjoyed cooking and sewing. She put her many talents to use when she and Lowell would work together, building churches with the Carpenters for Christ. Mary Jo was a Christian lady who loved every one she met.

She is survived by her husband of sixty years, Lowell; their son, Mark Hopper, of Salem; their daughter, Becky Hopper, of Salem; her brothers, Larry (and Lillian) Whittle, of Russell Springs, Estes (and Donna) Whittle, of Stanford, and Frankie (and Rose) Whittle, of Covington; her sisters, Nellie (and David) Gaskin, of Russell Springs, and Donna Sue Goodin, of Knifley; and her sister-in-law, Neat Whittle, of Gallatin, Tennessee.

Along with her parents, Mary Jo is preceded in death by her brother, Bobby Whittle.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gideons International for Bible placement.

Pallbearers will be Rick Whittle, Brent Hopper, David Whittle, James Johnson, Larry Bennett and Daris Bennett.
