Unless someone like you cares . . .

"Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot,
nothing is going to get better, it's not"
- Dr. Seuss

Guest speaker Lee Ann Jessee represented J.O.Y. Ministries at the January Chamber of Commerce meeting with a report of the charity's accomplishments helping those in need and a thank-you to the community for its support. Her talk included the following comments:

Deuteronomy 15:11 For there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore I command you. "you shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor in your land.

At JOY Ministries we know this scripture is true. You can tell it is too when you see the stats for 2022:

- Ruth's House (shelter for single women and single moms with children)-76 guests

- Cally's House (small men's shelter, houses 1-2) 26 guests

- Total: 102 homeless sheltered

- Helped 36 families from becoming homeless by providing assistance with rent or utilities or affordable housing options

- 1,772 food bags were given out

- 1,416 senior food boxes through Feeding America were given out

- Clothing and furniture to several families

- 25 children at summer camp and 50 at mission week

- 75 children were served at the Back to School bash held during Mission Week

- 50 Thanksgiving boxes handed out

- 66 Christmas boxes handed out

- 50 backpacks for children for Christmas

- 120 children helped for Christmas

It has been a busy, overwhelming year but thanks to this community's generosity and compassion many families and children were taken care of.

In December we always start our annual campaign to raise funds to operate Ruth's House, Cally's House the the Center. This year our goal of $45,000.00 was reached in four weeks, the quickest ever! Your generous giving of time, money and most of all, prayers, helped us reach that goal, even surpassing the goal!

Adair County people have the biggest hearts of anyone in the world. When need arises Adair County people get to work. Proverbs 19:17 tells us that "Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and He will repay him for his deed." We don't do it to get our money back, we do it to stand before God and be blessed.

Many times these individuals, especially the moms with children, leave in the middle of the night with nothing - no ID, no Social Security cards, no birth certificate-ever try to do anything without these documents? It's impossible. We start small and work with, them basically recreating their life through documents that are necessary. We hope that by starting small and working through these things they can see that they can have a different life and that they can make better choices, especially for their children. The children are where our hearts reside. We want better for them. We want them to see that life can be different, that they matter, and that people love them but most of all, God loves them BIG.

This is not about us. In fact, most of us at JOY stay below the radar. But we also know that sometimes we have to talk to groups and tell them what we do and the why. 1 John 3:17-18 says, "But if anyone has the world's goods and see his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth." We have to be about His business and do it.

We are so thankful for each person, business, church, organization that supports us in this mission. There is no way that this could happen if we did not have all of you all giving your time, your money and your prayers to help others. From the bottom of our hearts we thank you so very much and we know that God will bless you in all that you do for Him.

I must close with one of my favorite Dr. Seuss quotes, because I am a librarian after all:
"Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better, its not"

Lee Ann Jessee is the Director of the Adair County Public Library and can be found there daily.
