IGA Super Market on the Columbia Square

Re: Public Square in the snow, ca 1960

By JIM

The Columbia Kroger store closed on December 26, 1959. Within days, J.D. Harper, a veteran of the Columbia food scene, announced he was opening an IGA store there.

The grand opening of Harper's IGA Super Market was held on Thursday-Friday-Saturday, January 6, 7, & 8, 1960. The symbol at each end of the word "canned" in the "canned food sale" window announcement appears to be the IGA logo. Mr. Harper's ad in the March 9, 1960 Adair County News offered customers a "Dime of Your Life" sale on several varieties of canned vegetables.

This helps to verify the footage was indeed of the Great Snowfall of March 1960, as there were no major weather events the following winter, and the Ben Franklin store occupied the space well before the winter of 1961-1962 rolled in.
