A Thanksgiving Proclamation from the Governor, 21 Nov 1861

By Mike Watson

A Thanksgiving Proclamation from the Governor of Kentucky, Beriah Magoffin, during the Civil War: The Louisville Daily Courier, 21 November 1861, page 1.

Note that Nat Gaither, Jr. is mentioned; he was Kentucky Secretary of State at the time.

It reads:

We find the following Thanksgiving Proclamation of Gov. Magoffin, in the Louisville Journal of the 12:

Proclamation by the Governor Appointing a Day of Thanksgiving and Prayer,
EXECUTIVE DEPARTMENT
COMMONWEALTH OF KENTUCKY

In accordance with long established usage, I hereby name Thursday, the twenty-eighth day of November, instant, as a day of Thanksgiving and Prayer.

We are as a people suffering the evils of civil war; but in our grief and sorrow at surrounding ills, we must not be unmindful of the manifold blessings each day enjoyed by us. We must not forget the exhortation which speaketh to us as children--"Despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him." I therefore most earnestly invoke the citizens of this Commonwealth to bow themselves before the great Creator, and offer prayers, that, ascending to heaven as the dews of earth, will return in showers of mercy, and span our beloved land with the rainbow of God-given peace.

In testimony whereof, I, Beriah Magoffin, governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, have hereunto subscribed my name and caused the seal of the State to be affixed. Done at Frankfort, this 11th day of November, in the year of our Lord, 1861, and in the 70th year of the Commonwealth.

By the Governor: B. MAGOFFIN.
NAT. GATHIER, Jr., Secretary of State.
