Soccer: Second-half storm lifts Blue Raiders over Grace The Lindsey Wilson men's soccer team's second half adjustment was too much for No. 13 Grace (IN) to handle, as the Blue Raiders move on to round two after a 3-1 comeback victory on Thursday. This win marks the third consecutive year for LWC to advance to the Opening Round Final in the NAIA National Championship. Despite the freezing temperature and field conditions, Lindsey Wilson (11-6-3, 6-3-1) dug deep in the second half to complete the win over Winona Lake Bracket host Grace (11-3-1, 5-1-3). The Lancers controlled the pace for most of the first half as they managed to outshoot the Blue Raiders 9-2 and had the advantage in corner kicks 3-0. Pablo Costa made many magnificent saves to keep the Lancers out the back of the net after being outnumbered on multiple occasions. A careless mistake late in the half by LWC led to a key scoring opportunity for Grace to get on the board. LWC defensive errors in the first half came back to haunt them in the 35th minute as a controversial foul call inside the box by a Blue Raider led to a penalty kick score for Grace forward Felipe Gruber to go up 1-0 at the half. The Blue Raiders came out with some intensity in the second half by pushing the pace and getting more corner kicks and fouls commited by the Lancers in a chippy match. LWC set up multiple scoring opportunities for themselves early in the half but just could not seem to find the back of the net. That was until an advance pass by Victor Cavalcante found the head of Sadam Masereka for the equalizer to tie the match at 1-1 in the 79th minute. Masereka was not satisfied and continued putting constant pressure on the Lancers' back line which ultimately forced them to make the same mistake Lindsey Wilson did in the first half. A foul by a Grace defender inside the box led to a penalty kick goal by Alexander Koziolek to put LWC up 2-1 in the 85th minute. Masereka now has 12 goals on the season and Koziolek adds his seventh. A wonderful two man action by Koziolek and Jaland Larmond on the left edge of the box allowed Larmond to seal the game with a strike past the Lancers netminder for the 3-1 victory. Lindsey Wilson outshot Grace 18-12 with four more shots on goal than the Lancers (7-3) and managed to receive more corner kicks with a 12-3 advantage after not having any in the first half. Costa finished with two saves which brings him to 49 on the year. The Blue Raiders now wait for its second round opponent of the 2022 NAIA National Championship which will be the winner out of Keiser (Fla.) and Concordia (Neb.). Round two will be played on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 1pmCT in Winona Lake, Ind. at 1st Source Bank Field. This story was posted on 2022-11-18 07:23:21
