CPD: Arson Arrest

The Columbia Police Department made an arrest for arson on November 9, 2022, after a brief investigation which began on the previous day, November 8, 2022.

The investigation began after a party had started fire on the property of Save-a-Lot, located at East Guardian Street, on Tuesday night. A male subject was identified on surveillance footage and a warrant was obtained for the party's arrest.

The subject was observed by officers on Wednesday afternoon on Public Square and was taken into custody.


Zachary Ballou, 26, has been charged with criminal mischief 3rd degree as well as arson 3rd degree; a class D felony. Ballou is also facing additional charges stemming from being taken into custody including possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest.

Officer Trevor Foster is the investigating and arresting officer. He was assisted at the time of arrest by Sgt Evan Burton and Chief Jr Murphy.
