Travel: Canyonlands National Park, Utah

By Robert Ellis

Canyonlands National Park in Utah is split into three districts. The Maze, Island in the Sky, and the Needles. Our first National Park visit on this trip would be to the "Needles". Due to its distance from Arches in Moab, the Needles, Capital Reef and Maze are least visited, oftentimes altogether just skipped over...with Arches and Island in the Sky receiving the most visitors. We are glad we took the extra time and effort to visit it. It is a true gem of a National Park...and a lot less crowded! One of our favorite Parks on this trip.

On the way to the park, we experienced the Blue Mountains. Overnighting in the town of Monticello, Utah, put us a lot closer to the Needles, and that in turn allowed for a full day of hiking and exploring.

It was a healthy uphill hike to get to the spot from which this pic was taken. A total of 5.4 miles of moderate hiking, round trip...to experience the Needles up and close.

Note: We'll be posting photos from Robert's latest trip over the next week or so. Bookmark this page for more photos, and links to the other installments. --Pen

Travel: Island In The Sky in Canyonlands National Park

2022-11-11 - Canyonlands National Park, Utah - Photo by Robert Ellis, Robert Ellis Woodworking.
Robert writes, "Island In The Sky is about a 40 minute drive from Moab. It is a Mesa consisting of sheer sandstone cliffs resting 1000 feet above the surrounding terrain. This pic is of the popular Mesa Arch. A easy 1/2 mile round trip hike from the parking area. The Arch itself is on the edge of a 500 foot cliff, part of a 1,200 foot drop off into Buck Canyon. The La Sal Mountains are in the background."

Travel: Another view of Island In The Sky

Robert writes, "Another spectacular view from along the road that takes you through the park. My take on this park is that it has a look and feel similar to that of the Grand Canyon. It is well worth the 40 minute drive from the town of Moab."
