Photo accompanies this story
By Tom Fisher

Leah MacSwords, Director of the Kentucky Division of Forestry came to Knifley to present Firewise Communities/USA to Knifley Area Volunteer Fire Department. This is the first community in Kentucky to receive this nationally recognized wildland fire prevention program.

Knifley, Pellyton, and Roley in Adair County joins 114 other community in the USA, said Director MacSwords. We are very proud to present this distinguished recognition to the Knifley Area Volunteer Fire Department.

To receive Firewise Communities/USA recognition some rigorous requirements must be met: A local Firewise task force was established, the service area was assessed for wildfire hazards, an emergency action plan developed, fire prevention programs were presented, and held wildfire education events.

Firewise Communities/USA recognition program is part of the national Firewise Communities Program, which encourages local solutions for wildfire safety by involving homeowners, community leaders, planners, developers, firefighters and other in the effort to protect people and property from the risk of wildfire.

For information, visit www.firewise.org, and look at the national map that is there, the red dot in Kentucky is represents North of the Green River Adair County. Kentucky Division of Forestry will also provide this information, (502) 564-4496.
