Kidney donor sought for GCHS senior Chandler Wright

"At this point, doctors say that Chandler must have a living donor...and soon."

By Shelley Bishop

Chandler Wright's life is somewhat different than most Green County High School senior's. He loves music, but unlike most young men his age, he often has his earbuds in while either enroute to or at a doctor's office. Chandler has renal dysplasia, a chronic kidney disease.

At age 4, Chandler's family discovered that he only had one functioning kidney. The other could barely be called a kidney at all; it was more like a tiny partial kidnet. That news was not horribly surprising since he had other relatives who had the same issue. However, nine years later, doctors discovered that his "good" kidney would eventually need a transplant.

Since the renal dysplasia diagnosis roughly five years ago, Chandler has visited his kidney specialist in Lexington every three months and gone once a year for a full battery of tests. Chandler had surgery in 2019 to remove his nonfunctioning kidney; doctors suspected it was cancerous, but it was not. His doctors are doing their best to maintain his health, but he needs a transplant from a living donor, sooner rather than later. If a living donor is not found soon, Chandler will be off to dialysis three times a week.

July 4, 2022 looked like it may be Chandler's own personal Independence Day. His mother got a call early that morning that a kidney had been found. Chandler's family rushed him to Lexington, he was prepared for surgery, and then they got bad news. The kidney was damaged. Chandler came back home.

At this point, doctors say that Chandler must have a living donor...and soon. Anyone who would like to be checked to see if they are a match may call or text Chandler's mom, Sandy, at 270-932-1950 to get more information on how to get tested.

Anyone who would like to help the family with travel expenses may do so in one of two ways. An account has been set up at Limestone Bank in Greensburg, KY. To donate, let the bank know it is for the "Fight for Chandler Wright" account. A GoFundMe fundraiser is also ongoing. To contribute to that effort, go to gofundme.com and search for "Fight for Chandler Wright."

Help with expenses is nice (and greatly appreciated), but the family is really praying for a kidney. So, again, if you feel led to be a living donor, call or text 270-932-1950.
