Tammy Stotts introduced Stephen Baker at banquet

By Tammy Stotts

I am honored to have been asked to present the Columbia Adair County Chamber 2022 award for Volunteer of the Year to Steven Baker.

Steven is a dear friend, family member and also works for me at Southern Nest Realty as an Apprentice Auctioneer. Most everyone knows Steven as a funny guy from his comical live weather remotes to his swimsuit modeling in Cancun Mexico. Steven is also known for his big heart and generous spirit. He loves his community and is always willing to lend a helping hand when needed. He is an all around great guy.

Steven has been a member of the Relay for Life Committee for many years. He has volunteered and coordinated several charity events. Most recently when Relay cancelled all in-person events due to the pandemic he coordinated a Survivor's Dinner which was attended by survivors. He obtained a sponsor for the event so that the survivors and their guest could enjoy a catered meal at no cost to them. He also collected over 30 door prizes for the survivors to win.

He is a member of the Mark Twain Shrine Club. The Columbia-based club collects money through roadblocks, fundraisers and events to help Kosair Charities help children. Since the club's inception, the Mark Twain Shrine Club has donated thousands of dollars to Kosair Charities.

This year when Steven saw a need for the Paddle Trail in Adair County to be improved, he approached the Mayor and requested to bring back the Duck Race which hadn't been held in many years. He organized the race and recruited volunteers and through this race a total of $1,400 was raised toward the building of a kayak ramp on Russell Creek. If anyone has any influence, he would love for the ramp to be named Baker's Landing.

In line with his auctioneer abilities, he has coordinated and emceed several quarter auctions to raise money for various charities. The one he coordinated raised a total of $10,000 which was split between Kosair Charities/Mark Twain Shrine Club and the Columbia/Adair County Volunteer Fire Department for the WHAS Crusade for Children.

Columbia Magazine has invited each one who introduced his or her favorite winner at the annual Columbia Adair Chamber of Commerce banquet to share their words. Columbia Magazine hopes to have special notes about each and every nominee in addition to those who won the votes in the eight categories.
