Thought for the Month: The main quality of leadership is courage! If you dream it, you can do it!

Congratulations!

The Chamber of Commerce would like to on becoming the first Firewise Communities in Kentucky. The communities consist of Knifley, Pellyton, and Roley. We congratulations you on this honor of being the first....And all the hard work you put forth in making this possible. The chamber is proud of you!

Tim Smith, art professor at Lindsey Wilson College, is well underway developing the sculpture of the First Kentucky Cavalry being led by Col. Frank Wolford. Community members are welcome to stop by the studio in the basement of Lindsey Wilson Colleges Slider Humanities Building to view the process and ask questions of the artist. You may call Tim Smith at 384-8079 to make sure he is at the studio at a time you wish to visit.

Historian Kent Masterson Brown, author of The Civil War in Kentucky, writes, I am so thrilled that a memorial is being erected to the memory of Col. Frank Wolford and his first Kentucky Cavalry. Wolford is one of the most extraordinary people in Kentucky history. Few know of him today, but all Kentuckians should be reacquainted with his story. Congratulations to all the prideful folks in Adair County for your wonderful efforts.

The sculpture, to be placed in the Columbia city Cemetery, is funded with a grant from the Kentucky Arts Council and individuals and organizations of our county. Columbia/ Adair County Tourism Commission, the fiscal agent, appreciates the support and interest of the community. Dedication is scheduled for October 22.

Presidents Message

Since the last article entitled the Presidents Message was written, many things have happened with your Columbia-Adair County Chamber of Commerce. I will briefly update readers as to some things that the Chamber is working on, providing leadership for, or offering our support for in the community.

Many people were in attendance at the Chamber of Commerce Roadside Park on Friday, August 19 for the check presented to the Chamber for playground equipment that will be installed in the park soon. The check for $4900.00 is half of the money needed with the Chamber of Commerce funds and in kind work and donations making up the other $4900.00.

In the Chamber Slogan Contest, the final top three slogans were made public at the park on Friday, August 19. By now you know that the top three winners were: Columbia-The City of Promise, Columbia-A Caring Community of Committed Citizens, & Columbia, KY-A Good Place to Call Home. Please vote for your favorite slogan before September 2, 2005 and help us to Promote and Project the positive image for Columbia we are wanting.

There are ballots in the local banks, the Chamber office, & in the newspaper. All ballots are to due to the Chamber office by Tuesday, September 2, 2005 at 4:00 PM. The Public is encouraged to vote.

The Buy, Swap, Sell & Trade Day is coming up on Labor Day, Monday, September 5, 2005. Please plan to attend this Chamber of Commerce event.

Thanks so much, to so many who help make things possible,

Richard Phelps
President
