Broersma and Dukes are LWC Scholar-Athletes of the Year By Kyle Jackson Maaike Broersma and Cameron Dukes have been named the 2021-22 Lindsey Wilson College Scholar-Athletes of the Year. Broersma is a member of the Lindsey Wilson women's swimming team while Dukes just completed his career as a member of the football team. The pair was recognized on Tuesday at the college's annual Honors Convocation ceremony. Broersma and Dukes earned the award based on their academic, athletic, and civic achievements throughout their Lindsey Wilson careers. "Maaike and Cameron are high-character individuals and outstanding representatives of Lindsey Wilson College, both in and outside their athletic arenas," LWC athletics director Willis Pooler said. "Their leadership qualities, passion for their sport, and attention to detail with their academics are evident. Those traits will no doubt serve them well beyond their playing days at Lindsey Wilson. "Congratulations to Maaike and Cameron for all of their accolades throughout their careers and for being selected as our Lindsey Wilson College Student-Athletes of the Year." Broersma is an individual 2022 NAIA National Champion in the 100-yard backstroke and just the third Blue Raiders from the program to accomplish the feat. This season she captured seven NAIA All-American honors and was named the NAIA Swimmer of the Meet. In total, the sophomore has captured eight NAIA All-American honors in her career. She has etched her name into the record books four times, producing the fastest time in four events, two as an individual and two in relays. She holds the fastest time in both the 200 and 100-yard backstroke with marks of two minutes and 00.25 seconds and 54.80 seconds, respectively. Broersma also helped set programs records in the 400 and 200-yard medley relays. Broersma also holds two Mid-South Conference meet records in both the 200 and 100-yard backstroke and a host of All-MSC honors and one Academic All-MSC selection. Dukes led the Blue Raiders to the program's first-ever NAIA National Championship in 2020 as a quarterback while helping guide LWC to a 23-1 record over his final two seasons and advancing to the NAIA FCS Semifinals three straight seasons. In his career, Dukes is a three-time NAIA All-American, three-time Craig Mullins Mid-South Conference Offensive Player of the Year, and eight-time conference player of the week. He amassed 114 touchdown passes which is a program best. Dukes took finalist honors for the William V. Campbell Trophy, which goes to the top football student-athletes in the nation at all collegiate levels (NAIA and NCAA) while landing NAIA scholar-athlete, three academic all-conference accolades, and two CoSIDA Academic All-District(R) honors. He has also been named a seven-time NAIA Playoff Player of the Game, NAIA Championship Game Offensive MVP, and an MSC Male Student-Athlete of the Year. Dukes finished his career with a 40-5 overall record as a starter with the second-most passing yards in program history with 10,439 yards. His 62.7 completion percentage also tops the program's all-time list. He earned two degrees from Lindsey Wilson -- an undergraduate degree in physical education and health, and a master's in business administration. Dukes is the first-ever two-time winner of the award after also being the recipient during the 2019-20 season. He is the fifth football player to be named Lindsey Wilson College Scholar-Athlete of the Year while Broersma is the first women's swimming student-athlete to earn the honor.
