By Christopher Coombs

Frankfort, KY - Members of the 2020 Lindsey Wilson football team was recognized on Wednesday on the Senate floor of the Kentucky Capitol building for winning the NAIA National Championship last May.

Kentucky Sen. Max Wise introduced Senate Citation 14 on the Senate floor to honor the 2020 champions. The Citation recognized and honored Lindsey Wilson football for its "extraordinary performance during the 2020-21 athletic season" which culminated in a national championship.

Sen. Wise expressed his congratulations to the team on the Senate floor and via his Twitter account.

"An honor to recognize the 2020 national championship LWC Blue Raider football team today in the Senate," Wise said. "A long overdue recognition due to Covid restrictions. Congrats to the players & staff!"

The Blue Raider team received a standing ovation from the senators along with patrons in the chamber.

Before the recognition, the team was escorted to the House of Representatives floor for photographs with Kentucky Rep. Michael Sarge Pollock. The team then made the short walk to the opposite side of the Capitol to the Senate floor where Wise introduced the Citation.

"We would like to thank Sen. Wise and Rep. Pollock for their invitation to the Capitol and the recognition of our football team," Lindsey Wilson athletics director Willis Pooler said. "Their hospitality during our stay made this an incredible experience for our student-athletes and caps one of the most memorable seasons in our short football history."

"Today was a special day for our team and I only wish the entire 2020 championship team was here with us," Lindsey Wilson football head coach Phil Kleckler said. "We would like to thank everyone involved for making this such a special day, especially Sen. Wise and Rep. Pollock. This experience is something our guys will always remember."

The 2020 Blue Raiders captured the program's first national title with a 45-13 win over Northwestern (Iowa) on May 10, 2021. The national title came in the 11th season of the existence of the program. Lindsey Wilson started football in 2010.

Lindsey Wilson finished with a perfect 11-0 record in a unique football season. Due to COVID-19, the 2020 football season was played during the spring semester of 2021.
