Goff Motel, 1942 - 1953 By JIM In June 1941, J.H. Goff paid George Simpson $2,750 for property fronting on Merchant Street, and The News reported the house thereon contained 18 rooms. The following month came word the Red Cross had opened an emergency hospital in the frame building "to care for dysentery patients who cannot be given the proper attention at home." At press time, 10 beds were set up and four patients were in residence. When Mr. Goff offered the land and building for sale in early January 1947, the advertisement read in part, "For Sale: Rooming House. Large 20 room house, two blocks from Public Square..." The last mention found of it in The News appeared late 1953 with the announcement the establishment was open "under new Manager, being properly operated." Prospective residents were advised to see Mrs. Barnett Chapman, Manager. The ad imaged here appeared several times in the Russell County News from late April 1942 through early April 1943.
