Baseball: LWC host Brescia for home opener

By Austin Hall

The Blue Raiders return home Wednesday afternoon for the first time in 2022 as they host the Bearcats of Brescia University (KY) at 1pmCT in their home opener at Egnew Park, Lindsey Wilson Sports Complex, 928 Russell Road, Columbia, KY.

Lindsey Wilson (1-3) enters the game after losing the opening series of the season against (RV) William Carey (MS). The Blue Raiders led in every game of the series but late rallies by the Crusaders led to only one road win for the visitors. In those three games, the Blue Raiders averaged 6.3 runs per game but gave up 7 runs per game in return.

Nico Martinez and Kyle Collin batted .500 in the series against William Carey contributing 8 hits between the two while Koby Wall led the way with eight RBI's in the series. As a team the Blue Raiders batted .261 for the opening three games of the year. For two of the three games, starting pitching was excellent for the Blue Raiders. Cohen Achen and Josh Barnett contributed 10 innings of nine-hit baseball, holding the Crusaders to three earned runs and a .269 hitting percentage with nine strikeouts.

The Wildcats and their fourth-year head coach Jon Herbig begin their 2022 season on the road after their opening series against Christian Brothers University was canceled. They are coming off a 7-32 record last season with their only wins coming in River States Conference play.

Live video and live stats will be available.
