LWC Swimming tackles worldwide hunger By Kyle Jackson Members of the Lindsey Wilson College men and women's swimming teams are taking time from their fall schedules on Thursday to raise money for a good cause. The Blue Raiders plan to canvas the Columbia-Adair County area to raise money for the Heifer International -- a global nonprofit organization, working to eradicate poverty and hunger through sustainable, values-based holistic community development. "I like the educational aspect of Heifer International," Lindsey Wilson swimming coach Alicia Kemnitz said. "They don't just provide an animal or crops to the people; they teach them how to get the most out of them while sustaining the benefits long term." "It is an incredibly worthwhile organization that empowers people to help themselves," Kemnitz added. "Also, they encourage those they help to pass it on to other families. It's an organization we are proud to support." The swim program specifically chose to raise money to provide families with honeybees, mating alpacas, pigs, chickens and a hope basket. This act by the swim team is part of the Live5 initiative as an NAIA Student-Athlete where athletes are asked to showcase five core values - Integrity, Respect, Responsibility, Sportsmanship and Servant Leadership -- of being an NAIA Champion of Character. This event each season allows members of the swim program to get involved in the local community while changing people's lives and helping them flourish. According to the Heifer International website, the organization was created in 1944 with the idea of tackling hunger around the world by partnering with farmers across a range of different livestock and crops. Heifer distributes animals, along with agricultural and values-based training, to families in need around the world as a means of providing self-sufficiency. Recipients must agree to "pass on the gift" by sharing animal offspring, as well as the skills and knowledge of animal husbandry and agricultural training with other impoverished families. Heifer International is based in Little Rock, Arkansas, and has distributed livestock along with training and other resources, to more than 105.1 million people in over 125 countries. All the money collected will go to Heifer International to be used to tackle hunger throughout the world. To learn more about Heifer International, click here: https://www.heifer.org.
