CU: More than 100 participate in refugee simulation

By Gerard Flanagan

Campbellsville, KY - According to Trent Creason, campus minister, more than 100 students, faculty and staff participated in a refugee simulation on Monday, September 20, 2021, as part of Missions Week at Campbellsville University.

"The event went very well, and I believe very successful in helping expose participants to the experiences refugees walk through," Creason said.

According to Creason, the simulation provided participants with a simulated background, family and paperwork that provided a context for their refugee simulation. As a family, they had to successfully make it through the "border" to the refugee camp.

"Participants began at the Wellness Center and were required to make it the Student Activity Center that served as the refugee camp," Creason said.

Along the way in the simulation, participants experienced various challenges from border patrol and dishonest groups that real refugees might face, according to Creason.

The refugee simulation consisted of a refugee camp registration, security screening, medical station, language school, water and food station, holding area, immigration judge, resettlement interview and debriefing.

"At the end of the simulation participants are guided through a debriefing that help them consider their emotions and thoughts about the experience," Creason said. "During debrief, participants have a chance to process their experience. Finally, participants were provided tangible ways that action can be taken to serve refugees now. The event really gives an opportunity to put yourself in the shoes of refugees and consider what your role can be in helping."
