LWC Volleyball heads to Spartan Invitational this weekend

The No. 20-ranked Lindsey Wilson Volleyball team (7-1, 2-0 MSC) will take their six-game win streak to the streets of St. Louis this weekend as the team participates in the Spartan Invitational hosted by Missouri Baptist University.

The Blue Raiders will play two matches on Friday and one on Saturday. The Blue Raiders are set to open the invitational against top-ranked hosts Missouri Baptist at 12:30pmCT on Friday.

They will follow up that match with a game against No. 11-ranked Central Methodist (MO) at 5pmCT.

The following day, the Blue Raiders face Xavier (LA) at 10amCT. All matches will take place at Carl & Deloris Petty Sports and Recreation Complex, Dink Marler Ln, Creve Coeur, MO.


No. 1-ranked Missouri Baptist (6-2, 0-0 AMC) enters the match coming off a two-game win streak where they swept No. 21-ranked Grandview (IA) and Lincoln Christian (IL). The Spartans are led by Giovanna Tapigliani in the offense who has recorded 96 kills in eight games so far this season. The graduate student currently averages four kills per set and is hitting at a .318 percent.

No. 11-ranked Central Methodist (8-0, 0-0 HOA) opens the invitational against Xavier before playing Lindsey Wilson on Friday. The Eagles enter the invitational after opening the season with an eight-game win streak. Sophomore Callie Henson currently leads the team with 83 kills and has a hitting percentage of .425, the sixth highest in the NAIA.

Xavier (0-1, 0-0 RRAC) enters the invitational after opening their season with a 3-2 loss to Wayland Baptist (TX) on August 27th. The Gold Nuggets put down 61 kills, six aces, and nine blocks in the loss with sophomore Kennedy Wade, sophomore Giulia Follador, and senior Vivica Price-Spraggins all recording 12 kills in the match.

Lindsey Wilson enters the invitational after starting conference play strong this week with two victories over Shawnee State (Ohio) and Thomas More (KY) in three-set sweeps. Junior Johanna Alcantara, who set a new career-high in kills this week (17 vs. Thomas More), sits fifth in the NAIA with a hitting percentage of .431 while sophomore Radaisy Valdez sits eighth in the NAIA in blocks per set averaging 1.35. Junior Camryn Rich also finds herself in eighth in the NAIA in assists per set so far this season averaging 10.76 at the moment.
