LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 6/2/2021

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

As announced yesterday at the Governor's press conference, the retrospective audit of our vital statistics data to identify and account for all COVID-19-related deaths is now complete. The review included all death certificates for deaths that occurred from January 1, 2020, to January 31, 2021, and was conducted to identify any additional deaths that were not found through our primary COVID-19 death reporting process. The audit deaths provided today are mainly deaths that occurred prior to November 1, 2021. Going forward, all death certificates are monitored weekly to proactively identify any additional COVID-19 deaths that are not picked up through other methods.

So, we are reporting 7 historic deaths today: an 81-year-old from Casey who passed in July of 2020; a 71-year-old from Green who passed in September of 2020; a 90-year-old from Pulaski who passed in September of 2020; a 77-year-old from Pulaski who passed in September of 2020; an 87-year-old from Pulaski who passed in August of 2020; a 76-year-old from Pulaski who passed in September of 2020; and a 57-year-old from Taylor who passed in October of 2020.

We added fewer cases today than for the same time period last week so our 7-day-average incidence rate of new cases per 100,000 dropped.

Statewide Testing Positivity Rate: 2.77%.

Deaths: We are sad to report 7 new deaths today. We have experienced a total of 452 deaths resulting in a 2.01% mortality rate (about 1 in 50) among known cases. This compares with a 1.54% mortality rate at the state level and a 1.79% mortality rate at the national level. Our hearts and prayers go out to all the families and friends who have lost loved ones.

Hospitalizations: We presently have 17 cases in the hospital. This is 1 more than what we reported yesterday. We have had a total of 1,262 hospitalizations resulting in a 5.6% hospitalization rate (about 1 in 18) among known cases. The state hospitalization rate is 4.97%. The latest data shows that 73.33% of Lake Cumberland's ICU beds are filled, and 19.35% of ventilator capacity is being utilized.

Total (Cumulative) Cases: The Lake Cumberland District has experienced a total of 22,534 cases since the onset of the outbreak. This means that 10.79% of our total population has been a confirmed case. However, we do not know how many additional people may have had COVID-19 and were either asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic and never tested. Of our total cases, 0.51% are reinfections, and 1.53% contracted the virus after having received at least 1 dose of the vaccine.

Released (Not contagious) Cases: We released 6 cases today from isolation. Released cases include: McCreary: 1; Pulaski: 2; Russell: 1; and, Taylor: 2. In all, we have released 97.7% of our total cases.

Active (Current) Cases: We added 6 more cases today than we had deceased and/or released cases. This leaves us with 72 active cases in our district across 9 of our district's 10 counties. On 12/10/2020 we were at our peak number of active cases, 1,336.

Where Did Cases Visit Prior to Isolation: The most common places cases visited prior to isolation are (in descending order): Family, Medical Facilities, Businesses, and Long-term Care/Residential Facilities. Of our active cases, 13% can not be tied back to another known case (community-spread cases).

New Cases: We report that our total case count has increased by 19 today: Adair: 4; Casey: 1; Green: 2; Pulaski: 4; Russell: 1; Taylor: 6; and, Wayne: 1. Our current new case growth rate is: 1.0004. This means our total case count is projected to double every 1952.73 days. The most new cases we ever added in a single day was on 12/30/2020 when we added 301 cases. Today's new cases include:
