LWC Volleyball drops opening pool play match against Marian

By Kyle Jackson

Sioux City, IA - The Lindsey Wilson volleyball team lost 3-0 against No. 7 Marian in game one of their NAIA Pool Play matches this afternoon. Game two of pool play for the Blue Raiders will come later this evening at 7pmCT versus No. 10 Concordia (NE).

The loss moves the Blue Raiders record to 22-4 overall after the Knights took the match 25-15, 25-20, 25-21.

The Knights dominated things right from the beginning as they opened the scoring with a 5-1 scoring run to start the opening set. The Knights continued their explosive scoring, going out to a 16-5 lead and forcing the Blue Raiders into a timeout. Lindsey Wilson got back into the picture later in the set, thanks to a few errors from Marian, but it was the Knights who captured the first set of the evening 25-15 with 18 kills.

Lindsey Wilson found themselves down to begin the second set as Marian opened the second set with another five-point scoring run to lead 5-2. Later into the set, Natalie Ackermann tied things up at 16-16 with a service ace. The Blue Raiders worked to switch the pressure onto the Knights, with the two sides swapping the lead through a few points. The Knights were not bothered by the struggle as they buckled down to retake the lead and win set two 25-20.

Marian led the third set 5-3 before the Blue Raiders found their momentum and went on a scoring run to retake the lead at 6-5. Lindsey Wilson then took over for a majority of the third set, leading the match through kills from Radaisy Valdez and Alexis Smith. The Knights were not interested in playing extra sets, however, retaking the lead at 20-19 and winning the set 25-21 and the match 3-0.

Alexis Smith led the Blue Raiders with 10 kills on the afternoon while Camryn Rich had 28 assists and Lauren Larzelere recorded 13 digs.

The Blue Raiders will play their second game in pool play later this evening versus No. 10 Concordia (NE). The match is set to begin at 7pmCT.
