LWC Women's Soccer to begin NAIA Opening Round play today

The No. 15-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team begins their run in the 2020 NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship today when they take on Briar Cliff (IA) in the opening round of play at 4pmCT in Spring Arbor, Michigan. Live video and live stats will be available for the match.

After making it to the semifinals of the 2020 Mid-South Conference Tournament, the NAIA announced the Blue Raiders would be included as one of 40 teams competing for the 2020 NAIA National Championship in their selection show Monday afternoon. The Blue Raiders currently sit at a 9-3 overall record for the 2020 season and will appear in the championship for the 22nd time in program history with a No. 14-overall seed.


For the Blue Raiders this season, senior midfielder Yudaya Nakayenze serves as the anchor for the team's offense, leading the team with 7 goals, 16 points, 50 total shots, and 23 shots on goal. Nakayenze currently averages 4.17 shots per match, which ranks fifth in the Mid-South Conference. Sophomore midfielder Claudia Santillan Escobar and Junior midfielder Alicia Thoresen have notched three goals each and two assists this season. On defense, senior goalkeeper Eveljn Frigotto leads the team with 65 saves on the season, has recorded five shutouts, and currently has a goal against average of 1.37, the sixth highest in the conference. As a team the Blue Raiders have outscored their opponents 22-17 this season, averaging 1.83 goals per game and 1.00 assists per game.

Briar Cliff were announced to the bracket pool in the NAIA Selection Show Monday afternoon after winning the Great Plains Athletic Conference regular season going 11-1-2 in season play. The Chargers currently sit at a 12-2-2 overall record and enter the tournament with a No. 20-overall seed. This will be the first time in program history the Chargers have made the national tournament.

For the Chargers this season, the team's offense is led by senior forward Flor Suarez who has 15 goals in 15 games played this season, averaging a goal per game, leading the GPAC. Junior forward Taylor Hill leads the team with assists at eight this season, also leading the GPAC, and has seven goals scored on the year. On defense, senior goalkeeper Ruby Campa leads the team with 47 saves on the season, has recorded 10 shutouts, and currently has a goal against average of 0.38, tied for the seventh-best in the NAIA. As a team the Chargers have outscored their opponents 47-6 this season, averaging 2.94 goals per game and 2.31 assists per game.

This will be the first time both programs have met each other in all competitions.
