Ison guides Blue Raiders to upset win over Thomas More

By Kyle Jackson

The Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team pulled off the upset of No. 4 Thomas More on Monday afternoon at Biggers Sports Center. The Blue Raiders handed Thomas More their first loss of the season.

Hailey Ison had a record-setting afternoon, finishing the game with 23 points and 14 rebounds, a career-high in both. It marks the first double-double in her LWC career. Bree Glover also managed a double-double with 16 boards and 14 points. Maleigha Oldham just missed out on a double-double of her own with 13 points and nine rebounds.

The Blue Raiders came out strong leading the Saints 12-4 at the end of the first quarter. Sydnie Hall started where she left off on Saturday, adding a three late in the quarter to propel themselves to an eight-point lead. Ison would make her impact in the second quarter collecting 10 rebounds, keeping the possession at the Blue Raiders end. While both teams were shooting under 30% at the half, it was Thomas More who was struggling from beyond the arc, making only one of 13 attempts. The Saints did not enter double-digit points until 3:44 left in the second quarter.

Thanks to a couple of three-pointers from Barth and Hurst, Thomas More would cut the Lindsey Wilson lead down to seven in the third quarter. Ultimately, Thomas More outscored the Blue Raiders 20-17 across the 10 minutes of play.

Thomas More carried the momentum into the fourth quarter to take their first lead of the game, 48-47 with 6:24 on the clock. The Blue Raiders offense would prevail as Ison and Hall hit back-to-back three-pointers to quickly retake the lead on the next possessions. Lindsey Wilson put away 13 free throws in the final two minutes of play to secure a 73-63 victory.

Zoie Barth led the Saints with 16 points while Courtney Hurst scored 15 points for Thomas More.

No. 17 Lindsey Wilson continue their season with a three-game road trip, the first stop being a match-up against the Bears of Shawnee State (Ohio) on January 21 at 4:30pmCT.
