LWC Men drop road contest to no. 6 Georgetown

By Brady Budke

Georgetown, KY - The final game of 2020 wasn't friendly to the Lindsey Wilson men's basketball team, as the squad fell 80-68 on the road against No. 6-ranked Georgetown (KY). The Blue Raiders drop to 3-4 (1-3 MSC) on the season, while the Tigers jump up to 6-1 (3-1 MSC).

Payton Cundiff headlined play for Lindsey Wilson at the Davis-Reid Alumni Gym, scoring a team-high 21 points on seven made 3-pointers. Cundiff was just one 3-pointer shy of tying the single-game school record of eight made in a single contest.

Behind Cundiff, Elijah Jordan corralled 14 points while Ryan Friday notched double-figures with 11.

The Blue Raiders shot just 33.3 percent (23-of-69) from the field, while Georgetown produced a solid 50.8 percent (31-of-61) shooting afternoon. Despite Lindsey Wilson heavily winning the turnovers and steals battle, the team was out-rebounded 51-to-35 on the glass while GC dished out 22 assists compared to just seven from LWC.

The Tigers clawed ahead early in the contest, taking a quick 8-0 lead which forced a Lindsey Wilson timeout. Nearing the halfway mark in the half, GC continued to hold a comfortable single-digit cushion to stay out in front. Lindsey Wilson was unable to weather the storm from a hot shooting Georgetown squad, as the team trailed 43-30 heading into halftime.

First half scoring was distributed well throughout the Blue Raiders lineup, with seven players having recorded points. Travez Nyx had a team-high nine points, as LWC shot just 30.5 percent (11-of-36) from the field. The No. 6-ranked Tigers managed a strong 53.1 percent (17-of-32), led by a fantastic effort from Kyran Jones, who had 19 points and 11 rebounds on a perfect 7-of-7 shooting from the field.

The second half of action progressed on with GC continuing to manage a secure lead. The Tigers rolled the advantage to 14 by the halfway point, but Cundiff answered the call by catching fire from behind the arc for the Blue Raiders to chip the deficit down to single-digits. Despite the late-game heroics, Georgetown closed the game strong and in control to grab the 80-68 win.

The Lindsey Wilson men's basketball team returns to the court on Saturday, Jan. 2 to face Campbellsville (Ky.) at Biggers Sports Center beginning at 2:30 p.m. CT. Please view the LWC Athletics Home Attendance Protocols for more information.
