LWC Wrestling defeats two NAIA top-5 programs

Waleska, GA - The No. 4-ranked Lindsey Wilson wrestling team continued their winning ways this afternoon, taking down No. 3 Reinhardt (GA), No. 5 Southeastern (FL) and (RV) Truett-McConnell (GA).

The Blue Raiders fell behind early in all three of their matches on the day but slowly chipped away at their deficits to ultimately come out victorious three times. Lindsey Wilson defeated Southeastern 24-22, Truett-McConnell 43-9 and Reinhardt 25-22.

With the wins, the Blue Raiders move to an impressive 9-0 on the season with eight wins over opponents in or receiving votes in the NAIA Coaches Top-25 poll. Lindsey Wilson has defeated four opponents inside of the top-10.



(No. 4) Lindsey Wilson 24 | (No. 5) Southeastern 22
The Blue Raiders dropped their opening two matches via fall's to spot the Fire an early 12-0 lead. Tanner DeMien scored LWC's first points of the match when he won on a 16-0 technical fall over Jaquan English (No. 18 at 141).

Trent Johnson (No. 3 at 149) and Derrick Smallwood (No. 2 at 157) managed back-to-back decision victories to pull the Blue Raiders within one point at 12-11. Johnson defeated Andreus Bond (No. 14 at 149) 3-1 before Smallwood downed Kyle Kirkham (No. 11 at 157) 7-3.

Joe Koontz (No. 7 at 165) won on a forfeiture to give the Blue Raiders their first lead of the contest. It was short-lived as Southeastern quickly regained the lead after winning on a major decision and a fall at 174 and 184-pounds.

Trailing 22-17 with two matches to go, Trevor Lawson (No. 2 at 184) picked up a 9-1 major decision over Trillyon Fils-Aime before Brandon Reed closed out the match with a 5-1 decision over Sanford Meeks (No. 4 at HW). The results pushed the Blue Raiders to a close 24-22 victory over the No. 5-ranked Fire.

(No. 4) Lindsey Wilson 43 | (RV) Truett-McConnell 9
Lindsey Wilson rolled in their second match of the day, picking up eight of ten wins for the contest. Truett-McConnell managed a technical fall victory at 125-pound before LWC strung together five straight wins, four via pins.

Gabe Adams pinned Ethan Frye in three minutes and 30 seconds at 133-pounds before DeMien made quick work of Cameron Epsy in 1:01. Johnson then pinned Leonel Silvestre in 4:15 at 149-pounds followed by Smallwood picking of a forfeit win. Koontz increased the LWC lead to 28-5 when he managed a 15-4 major decision against Mitchell Thompson.

LWC dropped their second match of the contest at 174-pounds before closing out the match with a decision and two pins.

Austin Deffenbaugh battled to a 7-5 decision over Hans Evatt at 184-pounds. Lawson made quick work of Dalton Hardeman, picking up a pin in just 34 seconds as Reed finished things off with a pin over Jiovanni Forbes at 1:10 of the contest.

Once again the Blue Raiders trailed early as they lost via pins at 125 and 141-pounds. Sam Bacon (No. 5 at 133) picked up a 5-3 decision win over Elijah Griffin as Johnson also won on a decision -- 5-1 -- at 149-pounds over Trevor Burdick. The wins put LWC down just six points at 12-6.

Smallwood went to work against Cole Luallen where he picked up a 16-5 major decision to pull the Blue Raiders within two points.

Koontz gave the Blue Raiders their first lead of the match when he pinned Matt Jenkins 45 seconds into the second period. Reinhardt quickly regained the lead with a pin victory at 174-pounds and a major decision at 184-pounds.

Trailing 22-16 entering the 197-pound bout Lawson battled Antonio Stewart (No. 2 at 197) to a 5-3 sudden victory one win to pull the Blue Raiders within striking distance.

Reed once again put the match away after he was able to take down DeShaun Baker on a pin on 6:16 to give the Blue Raiders a 25-22 win.

The Blue Raiders return to the mat on Monday, January 4th when they play host to Midway (Ky.) at 7pmCT in Biggers Sports Center.
