Letter: Question about flu data

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
Speaking of the flu, how many flu deaths have there been in the United States this year and how do those flu deaths compare with pre-Covid 19 yearly flu deaths?
Comments re: COVID-19: if you think it's no worse than flu

Thanks for writing. We don't yet have data for the current 2020/2021 season. Based on lab reports of confirmed cases, the CDC states that "Seasonal influenza activity in the United States remains lower than usual for this time of year."

For previous flu seasons, the following numbers are large scale statistical estimates* from the CDC web site's page
  • 2013/2014 Flu Deaths Estimate*: 38,000
  • 2014/2015 Flu Deaths Estimate*: 51,000
  • 2015/2016 Flu Deaths Estimate*: 23,000
  • 2016/2017 Flu Deaths Estimate*: 38,000
  • 2017/2018 Flu Deaths Estimate*: 61,000
  • 2018/2019 Flu Deaths Estimate*: 34,000
  • 2019/2020 Flu Deaths Estimate*: 22,000
  • 2020/2021 Current season not yet estimated
*The page linked above provides details about how these estimates are calculated, as well as broader ranges of possible numbers with higher statistical confidence. In addition, numbers since 2016 are only preliminary estimates, and there are not yet estimates for the current 2020/2021 flu season.

The total of the estimated flu deaths for all the 7 years above is 267,000.
