Letter: What the mask mandate is, and isn't

Amy Pike writes:
The mask mandate by the governor is an executive order and not a law. Therefore, it is not the police department's responsibility to enforce the mandate, that would defer to the Health Department.

The police department's role is to enforce Kentucky Revised Statutes (KRS). Business owners can choose whether to enforce it or not but there are several exemptions as outlined in the Governor's official order. You can view that at this link - https://governor.ky.gov/attachments/20200709_Executive-Order_State-of-Emergency.pdf

Another note, 911 is a vital service to the community.

As a former dispatcher, please do not call 911 over someone not wearing a mask or gathering in large groups. The time spent answering those calls could be a matter of life or death for someone with a true emergency. - Amy
