Who's Who in leadership: Chamber President Richard Phelps

By Linda Waggener

Richard Phelps, President of the Columbia-Adair County Chamber of Commerce, is a tireless volunteer, doing whatever is needed to help make Columbia prosper and be a better place for coming generations. He has deep roots here as a native of Adair County, and has had nearly 30 years experience in his field.

His wife, Mary Beth Sims Phelps, and he work with their partners, Louis and Brenda McQueary, in Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home on Greensburg Street in Columbia. Richard is the son of William E. (Billy) and Rebecca Morris Phelps. He and Mary Beth have two children, Elizabeth (Mrs. Ben) Ballou and Will Phelps, a student at Middle Tennessee State University. Richard is a graduate of the Kentucky School of Mortuary Sccience in Louisville, and has also attended Lindsey Wilson College.

He recommends joining the organization and says, "The Chamber provides many services for businesses, especially as a network, and as a strong referral service." He also points to the benefit of the training opportunities available from Chamber. He is extremely proud of the Training and Development Center building and all the possibilities that it allows for Adair County. He is proud that when someone stops in or calls 384-6020, a pleasant person is right there to help out.

Richard would like to see the Columbia-Adair County Chamber of Commerce grow to 225 to 250 members during his two-year term. The new membership drive is now underway.
